I was in The Bridge in 2006 the day the England football team broke its habit of losing to Germany in the World Cup and lost instead to Portugal after a penalty shoot-out. Afterwards – unusual I know, but true all the same – most of those in the bar threw themselves into the canal in despair. The water was so thick with writhing bodies it was like a Saturday afternoon at the municipal swimming baths. One bloke decided to go further than the rest and leapt off the bridge. Everyone was drunk, but he must have been drunker than the rest. He missed, landed on the towpath and broke his wrist, all in one smooth action.
